USEFUL PRINTING TERMS
 
BLEED:
Printing that extends beyond the trimmed edge of a printed piece.
 
BLUELINE:
A proof made from plate-ready negatives to show positioning, cropping, etc.
 
CAMERA READY:
A layout that is ready for print.
 
CMYK:
Cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks which are combined on press to produce full color printing.
 
CROP:
Trimming an image.
 
DPI:
Stands for dots per inch, which measure the resolution of an image.
 
DYLUX:
See BLUELINE
 
FOUR COLOR PROCESS:
Printing method that uses cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks to produce full color images (See CMYK)
 
GRAYSCALE:
A range of shades from white to black used in monochrome printout
 
GUTTER:
White space between columns of type
 
INDICIA:
Means of showing that postage has been paid. Users must have a mailing permit from the USPS.
 
LAMINATE:
Overlay paper with plastic film.
 
MARGIN:
White space at the top, bottom, left and right of a sheet.
 
PMS:
Pantone Matching System, a method of matching spot colors.
 
PROOF:
A sample showing what a final printed product will look like so that mistakes may be corrected before printing.
 
RGB:
Stands for red, blue and green which create color on computer screens.
 
SCORE:
A crease or indent.
 
SHRINK-WRAP:
Enclosing packages in clear plastic film.
 
WATERMARK:
Faint design manufactured in some paper which is visible when held up to light.
